Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tonzr really free?
Yes, we try to be pretty clear about that.
How do I use Tonzr?
Using Tonzr is very simple. When you find the ringtone you want, click on it, type your full phone number, leave the download method at the default, or set it accordingly. Click "Send!" and wait for your ringtone.
What phones and carriers does Tonzr work with?
So far, we support any phone with internet and MP3 capabilities on the following networks: Sprint, Nextel, AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon, Alltel, US Cellular, Cellular South, and Cricket. We'll be adding Helio and hopefully many others soon.
Verizon customers must use the MMS method, which will count as a picture message on your plan.
I entered my phone number, but I never received the text message. What's going on?
Please email info@tonzr.com with your full phone number and carrier and we'll look into it.
Is there a mailing list I can join to get notified of updates to Tonzr?
Not yet. We'll be putting together a mailing list soon, though.
Who built Tonzr? Who do I thank for this amazing site?
I did, of course, and you're welcome. I'm just a normal seventeen-year-old eighteen-year-old kid with an entrepreneurial spirit and a nag for Web development. A while back, I had a great idea to bring free ringtones to the world; and thus, Tonzr was born. I also had some help from a 15-year-old developer friend of mine, and Tonzr's design was generously donated by an young and extremely talented designer, David Nichols. And no, I'm not lying about our ages. Three teenage kids made Tonzr.
Are you really only seventeen years old?
I was when I built Tonzr, but I recently had a birthday.
I'm a fellow PHP developer, can I have the source code to Tonzr?
No. However, don't rule out the possibility of an API sometime down the road. *wink, wink*
If Tonzr is free, how can you afford to keep the site up? Do you guys even make any money from the site?
The reason I'm able to keep this site up and running is because the costs have been low enough that I can afford it all out-of-pocket. I have a full time, 9 to 5 job as a Web Software Engineer, so I'm not exactly broke. Also, Tonzr's unmetered bandwidth and dedicated server is being provided at a unbeatable price by my good friends over at OpenReaction Hosting Solutions, Inc. which helps a lot. I have a few ideas to pull some profit out of Tonzr so I can keep it going, but don't worry. None of my ideas involve charging for the ringtones.
Is Tonzr ever going to charge for it's ringtones? Is this free thing just some kind of trial-period or publicity stunt?
We have no plans to ever charge for individual ringtones. Now, I'll be honest, a one-time fee or subscription may eventually be required to access our site; but don't worry. We would only do that as a last resort to stay online. We plan on doing our best to keep this service free forever.
It sounds too good to be true, so what's the catch?
Seriously, there's no catch. Okay, well you do need an internet-enabled cell phone with MP3 playback capabilities in order to use the ringtones, but there's nothing else to it. I guess if you're still living in 1999 and have a really crappy plan, you might get charged for the text message or data transfer.
Is Tonzr legal? Don't you HAVE to pay for ringtones?
We sure hope so. Just kidding. As of January 07, 2008, according to our lawyer friends, Tonzr is fully compliant with all current United States laws. If you think you know of a law we may be violating, we'd like to hear about it.
My school or work blocked Tonzr. What can I do?
We'll still be here when you get home, don't worry. Get back to work.
Tonzr doesn't have the ringtone I'm looking for.
First, double check the spelling. If you misspell the artist or song title, it's unlikely you'll find the results you're looking for. If you're sure we don't have it, there's good chance that we'll have what you're looking for soon. Our database is growing every day. Some artists that we don't have available yet often have "tribute" or "karaoke" versions that you may find suitable as your ringtone.
Can I upload and contribute my own ringtones to Tonzr?
Not yet... There's some legalities involved there.
Tonzr doesn't have the part of the song I want as my ringtone. Can I change which part of the song is used?
Unfortunately, no. Due to United States copyright law and the nature of our database, we have no control over which part of the songs are made available for ringtones. There's nothing we can do about this. The law is the law.
I have a Palm Treo or Centro, can I still use Tonzr?
You sure can. You just need free little palm app called MiniTones if you don't already have it. According to my tests, you may also need an SD card. If MiniTones isn't working, you may want to try MusicTones, but I haven't tested that one.
